5 Powerful Secrets to Crack IELTS Writing Task 2 and Score Band 8

If there is one part of the exam that gives students nightmares, it is IELTS Writing Task 2. It carries double the marks of Task 1, meaning your entire writing score depends heavily on this one essay. As a trainer, I see many talented students stuck at Band 6.0 simply because they don’t know how to organise their thoughts.

You might be asking: “How do I come up with ideas?” or “How do I structure my essay?” Today, I am going to share 5 powerful strategies that I teach my premium students—strategies that will take the fear out of IELTS writing task 2.

1. The 5-Minute Planning Rule for IELTS Writing Task 2 (Don’t Skip This!)

The biggest mistake I see students make is reading the question and immediately starting to write. This is a disaster waiting to happen. If you start writing without a plan, you will get lost halfway through, repeat yourself, or go off-topic.

My Advice: Spend the first 5 minutes just planning.

  • Analyse the Question: Is it an “Agree/Disagree” or “Problem/Solution” essay?
  • Brainstorm: Write down 2-3 main ideas.
  • Structure: Decide what goes in Paragraph 1 and Paragraph 2.

Trust me, a well-planned essay writes itself.

2. How to Generate Ideas Instantly (The “Coffee Shop” Method)

“Sir, my mind goes blank!” This is a common complaint I get for IELTS writing task 2. You don’t need to be an expert in economics or environment to write a Band 8 essay. You just need common sense.

Use the Coffee Shop Method. Imagine you are sitting in a coffee shop with a friend, and they ask you the question in simple language.

Question: “Should government spend money on art?”

Coffee Shop translation: “Why should we give money to painters when people are hungry?”

When you simplify the question, your brain produces ideas faster. Think about how the topic affects:

  • Money (Economy)
  • People (Society/Health)
  • Environment (Nature)

3. The 4-Paragraph Structure (Keep It Simple)

You do not need 5, 6, or 7 paragraphs. For a high score, a simple, logical structure is best. I recommend the classic 4-paragraph model:

  • Introduction: Paraphrase the question + Give your opinion (Thesis Statement).
  • Body Paragraph 1: Your first main idea + Explanation + Example.
  • Body Paragraph 2: Your second main idea (or the opposing view) + Explanation + Example.
  • Conclusion: Summarise your main points + Restate your opinion.

4. Use the “PEEL” Technique for Body Paragraphs

To get a high score in Coherence and Cohesion in IELTS Writing Task 2, your paragraphs must be fully developed. Don’t just list bullet points. Use the PEEL method:

  • P – Point: Start with a Topic Sentence (e.g., “Firstly, remote work reduces stress.”).
  • E – Explain: Why is this true? (e.g., “This is because employees do not have to commute in heavy traffic.”).
  • E – Example: Give a specific example (e.g., “For instance, a recent study in Australia showed…”).
  • L – Link: Connect back to the question.

5. Practice Makes Permanent (Start for Free!)

Reading these tips is helpful, but it won’t magically improve your writing. Writing is a skill, like swimming or driving. You must do it to learn it.

This is where FlyIELTS is different. You don’t need to pay for a course immediately to start improving. We offer a Free Account that gives you access to:

  • Vocabulary Exercises: Build the words you need for Task 2.
  • Grammar Practice: Fix those small errors that lower your score.
  • Sample Questions: Real IELTS questions to practice your planning.

Don’t wait until the week before the exam. Start building your foundation today.

Conclusion

IELTS Writing Task 2 is not a test of your intelligence; it is a test of your ability to communicate ideas clearly. By planning your essay, using the “Coffee Shop” method for ideas, and sticking to the 4-paragraph structure, you can handle any topic the examiner throws at you.
