Master IELTS Writing for a Band 7+ Score
Comprehensive strategies for Academic and General Training. Learn how to structure your essays, analyse data, and avoid common grammatical errors.
Understanding the IELTS Writing Format
The IELTS Writing module is designed to assess how you write a response, organise ideas, and use a range of vocabulary and grammar accurately. The test lasts for 60 minutes and comprises two tasks. Managing your time effectively between these two tasks is crucial for achieving a high band score.
⏱️ Time Management
Task 1: Spend approx. 20 minutes.
Task 2: Spend approx. 40 minutes.
Task 2 contributes double the marks of Task 1.
📝 Word Count Rules
Task 1: Minimum 150 words.
Task 2: Minimum 250 words.
There is no upper word limit, but aim for quality over quantity.
IELTS Writing Task 1 & Task 2 Explained
IELTS Writing Task 1
Depending on whether you are taking the Academic or General Training module, the requirement differs:
- Academic Module: You will be presented with visual information (a line graph, bar chart, pie chart, table, map, or process diagram). You must summarise the main features, select key data, and make comparisons where relevant.
- General Training: You will be given a situation and asked to write a letter. The letter may be formal, semi-formal, or informal depending on the recipient.
IELTS Writing Task 2
This remains the same for both Academic and General Training, though the topics may vary slightly in difficulty. You are asked to write a discursive essay in response to a point of view, argument, or problem.
Common essay types include:
- ✅ Opinion Essays (Agree/Disagree)
- ✅ Discussion Essays (Discuss both views)
- ✅ Advantages & Disadvantages
- ✅ Problem & Solution
How is IELTS Writing Marked?
To score well, you must understand exactly what the examiners are looking for. Your writing is assessed on four distinct criteria, each carrying 25% of the mark:
1. Task Achievement / Response
Did you answer the question fully? For Task 1, did you present a clear overview? For Task 2, is your position clear throughout the essay?
2. Coherence & Cohesion
Is your writing organised logically? Do you use linking words (connectors) effectively, and does each paragraph have a clear central topic?

3. Lexical Resource (Vocabulary)
Do you use a wide range of vocabulary naturally? This involves using collocations (words that go together) and avoiding repetition.
4. Grammatical Range & Accuracy
Do you use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures? How frequent are your grammatical errors?
Common Mistakes Bangladeshi Students Make
At FlyIELTS, we have evaluated hundreds of papers from Bangladeshi students. Here are the most frequent errors that lower band scores:
- ❌ Translating from Bengali to English: This leads to awkward sentence structures. English sentence patterns differ significantly from Bengali (Subject-Object-Verb vs Subject-Verb-Object).
- ❌ Memorising “Template” Phrases: Examiners can easily spot memorised lengthy introductions or phrases that don’t fit the context. This lowers your score for Task Response.
- ❌ Subject-Verb Agreement: A common grammatical slip (e.g., writing “The number of students increase” instead of “increases“). Create a Free Account to Practice Grammar.
- ❌ Lack of Paragraphing: Failing to separate ideas into clear paragraphs makes the essay difficult to read and hurts your Coherence score.
