Test Structure

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a standardised English proficiency test required for study, work, and migration purposes in English-speaking countries. It is a comprehensive test covering four essential language skills, administered in the following structure:

  • Listening: A 30-minute test followed by 10 minutes to transfer answers, consisting of four sections with 40 questions.
  • Reading: A 60-minute test with 40 questions, split into three sections. The content varies based on the Academic or General Training module.
  • Writing: A 60-minute test with two tasks. Task 1 differs for Academic and General Training, while Task 2 is an essay for both modules.
  • Speaking: A face-to-face interview lasting 11-14 minutes, with three parts: an introduction, a long turn (cue card), and a two-way discussion.

The test lasts approximately two hours and 45 minutes, and candidates must demonstrate proficiency across all four skills.

IELTS Modules Academic and General Training

Modules and Differences

IELTS offers two modules—Academic and General Training (GT)—designed for different purposes. While both modules evaluate listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills, there are significant differences:

Academic Module:
• They are designed for candidates pursuing higher education or professional registration abroad.
• Reading: Passages are taken from books, journals, and academic sources, with more complex vocabulary and abstract topics.
• Writing Task 1: Involves describing a graph, chart, table, or diagram.

General Training Module:
• They are designed for those seeking migration or employment opportunities in English-speaking environments/countries.
• Reading: Passages focus on general, everyday topics, with sections on social survival and work-related texts.
• Writing Task 1: Requires writing a letter in a formal, informal, or semi-formal style.

Regardless of the module, both versions have the same Listening and Speaking tests, but the content and focus in Reading and Writing vary to suit different goals.

IELTS Test Skills

Required Skills to Succeed

Achieving a high band score in IELTS requires a combination of language and test-taking skills:

  • Listening Skills: Ability to understand different accents, note vital points, and identify details, opinions, and context within conversations or monologues.
  • Reading Skills: Efficient skimming and scanning for main ideas, details, and implicit meanings; understanding complex vocabulary and sentence structures.
  • Writing Skills: Ability to organise ideas clearly, use a wide range of vocabulary and grammar accurately, and develop well-structured responses within time limits.
  • Speaking Skills: Fluency, coherent expression of ideas, correct pronunciation, and a varied vocabulary are essential for high scores on the Speaking test.

Challenges Faced by Bangladeshi Students in Securing a High Band Score

Many Bangladeshi students face specific challenges in achieving a high IELTS band score, which can impact their study, work, or migration plans:

  • Limited Exposure to Spoken English: Due to limited opportunities to practice spoken English, students often need help with fluency and pronunciation during the Speaking test.
  • Time Management Issues: Managing time across sections, especially in Reading and Writing, is a common challenge, as students may need help to complete tasks fully.
  • Vocabulary Limitations: Many students have limited exposure to academic English, making it challenging to understand and use advanced vocabulary accurately.
  • Test Anxiety: The pressure to achieve high scores can lead to anxiety, which negatively affects performance, particularly in the Speaking and Listening sections.
