IELTS Writing Test Structure, Question Types, Skills Needed, and Support for Bangladeshi Students

IELTS Writing Test Structure

The IELTS Writing Test consists of two tasks, varying slightly depending on whether a candidate takes the Academic or General Training (GT) module. Each version requires recognisable writing styles and purposes:

Academic IELTS:
• Task 1: You describe visual information (e.g., graphs, charts, tables) in at least 150 words.
• Task 2: You write a 250-word essay responding to a point of view, argument, or problem.

General Training IELTS:
• Task 1: You compose a formal or informal letter (e.g., requesting information, explaining a situation).
• Task 2: Similar to Academic Task 2, but often with broader, everyday topics suitable for general audiences.
Both tasks must be completed in 60 minutes (20 minutes for Task 1 and 40 minutes for Task 2), with each task contributing to the final Writing score.

Question Types in IELTS Writing

The types of questions for both Academic and General Training IELTS are categorised as follows:

  • Academic Task 1: Require describing line graphs, bar charts, pie charts, tables, processes, maps, and multiple data sources.
  • General Training Task 1: Formal, informal, and semi-formal letters for complaints, requests, or apologies.
  • Task 2 (Both Versions):
    • Opinion Essays: Discuss a viewpoint and present your own opinion.
    • Discussion Essays: Evaluate different sides of an argument.
    • Problem/Solution Essays: Identify problems and suggest solutions.
    • Cause/Effect Essays: Analyse causes and effects on a topic.

Each type requires a distinct approach in structure, tone, and examples.
