IELTS Speaking Test Structure
The IELTS Speaking Test is a face-to-face or virtual interview that evaluates a candidate’s spoken English skills in three parts, lasting 11-14 minutes in total:
Part 1 (Introduction and Interview):
• Duration: 4-5 minutes.
• Focus: Familiar topics like work, studies, hobbies, and family.
Part 2 (Individual Long Turn):
• Duration: 3-4 minutes.
• Format: The candidate receives a cue card with a topic and related points to cover. They get 1 minute to prepare and must speak for 1-2 minutes.
Part 3 (Discussion):
• Duration: 4-5 minutes.
• Focus: A more complex discussion related to Part 2’s topic, requiring more profound analysis and reasoning.

Question Types and Examples
The IELTS Speaking Test covers a variety of question types designed to assess different aspects of spoken English:
Personal Questions (Part 1): Simple questions about everyday topics.
• Example: “Do you enjoy reading? Why or why not?”
Cue Card Topics (Part 2): Candidates are given a topic to speak about, with prompts to structure their response.
• Example: “Describe a memorable holiday you had. You should say where you went, who you were with, what you did, and explain why it was memorable.”
Abstract or Complex Questions (Part 3): Questions encouraging analysis and discussion.
• Example: “How important is it for people to travel and learn about other cultures?”.
